Welcome back to another episode of the Wicked Good Pulls podcast! In Episode 8, the brothers clear the air on some unresolved childhood grievances before diving into some serious Whatnot auction strategies and questioning their life choices.
The Sega Genesis Trauma
Mike starts the show by formally apologizing for his aggressive and rude tone during the Episode 4 debate.
He traces his hostile behavior back to a traumatic Christmas memory involving a brand new Sega Genesis and the Batman video game. (After further review, this may have been Batman Returns)
Mike claims he set an alarm for 6:30 AM to finally get a turn to play, only to find Matt had beaten him to the basement and refused to hand over the controller.
Are We Having a Midlife Crisis?
Matt drops an existential question on the podcast, wondering aloud if their entire sports card side hustle is actually just a shared midlife crisis.
After having ChatGPT define what a midlife crisis is, the guys realize they perfectly fit the typical late-30s to mid-50s age bracket.
Fortunately, they decide they are just having fun as a family, since they clearly lack the required “emotional turmoil”.
The $3 Jordan Experiment & Back Wall Strategy
On the selling front, Mike talks about abandoning his tiered pricing and throwing his premium $5 and $10 Michael Jordan cards into a $3 starting pile.
The gamble paid off, with the lower starting price sparking bidding wars that drove cards into the high teens and twenties.
Matt recaps an incredibly fun and targeted Duke stream he ran right before the Duke/UNC game.
He successfully moved nostalgic autographs from players like Elton Brand and Cherokee Parks.
Matt also breaks down his “back wall” strategy, where he keeps premium inventory on display at a set price and simply waits for the chat to request it.
