Welcome back to another episode of the Wicked Good Pulls podcast! In Episode 9, the guys dive into some highly targeted Whatnot stream strategies, debate the ethics of destroying sports cards for entertainment, and take a massive detour into 2000s pop culture.
The Duke Stream Success
Matt kicked off the episode by recapping his incredibly successful Duke Blue Devils stream on Whatnot.
The stream ran for about an hour and a half and featured a mix of modern players like Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach, alongside nostalgic throwbacks like Elton Brand, JJ Redick, and Bobby Hurley.
The secret to his success? He strategically scheduled the stream to run right before the highly anticipated Duke vs. North Carolina game, drawing in an excited crowd of true fans (and a few hecklers).
The Hostage Stream Pitch
Inspired by Matt’s upcoming Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry stream, Joe pitches a chaotic and completely unethical new sales tactic.
Joe suggests holding two rival cards hostage and letting the winning bidder actually destroy the opposing team’s card on camera.
While Matt admits the idea of setting an opponent’s card on fire is undeniably fun, he worries that avid collectors in the hobby might find it deeply disrespectful.
Connor Price & Mid-70s Action Heroes
Mike forces a pop-culture detour to ask the group if his new favorite rapper, Connor Price, is considered cool. He recommended giving the song Scoop a listen.
Matt immediately shuts him down, revealing that while his kids used to love Connor Price, they completely outgrew his music by the time they hit 12 years old.
Unfazed, Mike pivots to his latest movie recommendation: Dead of Winter on HBO.
He highly praises the film for casting Emma Thompson as a mid-70s (she is actually only 66 as of this recording. Our apologies Ms. Thompson.) action hero trying to save a kidnapped girl, noting how incredibly realistic her portrayal of an aging hero was.
Expanding Retro Ripping
Wrapping up the card talk, Mike mentions that he is looking to expand his Whatnot inventory.
Since he currently focuses heavily on Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Allen Iverson, he asks the guys for their input on targeting Vince Carter cards next.
